Richard has worked for most United States periodicals and newspapers ranging from The Progressive to National Geographic and international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations publication divisions . Downs is a graduate of Art Center College of Design and was a faculty member for 6 years and currently he teaches editorial illustration at Sierra College and mentors High School seniors regarding careers in art. In the cyberworld Richard was a frequent contributor to Salon and a consultant on CD ROM games including Riven the sequel to Myst and Downs designed the unique interface for the now classic Edgar Allan Poe CD ROM ,The Dark Eye. Richard lives in Northern California in the historic Victorian mining town Nevada City with his wife and artist Gwyn Stramler and their daughter . Richard is a member of picturemechanics.com
